Hail damage is one of the most misunderstood types of roof damage because most of it is not visible from the ground. By the time you are thinking about calling a roofer, the storm may be weeks in the past — and the question is whether there is actually damage worth pursuing.
What Hail Does to Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles have a layer of protective granules on the surface. Those granules deflect UV rays and protect the asphalt layer beneath. When hail hits hard enough, it knocks loose a cluster of granules and leaves a circular bruise. On its own, one bruise does not cause a leak — but enough of them across the roof means the asphalt is now exposed and will degrade faster than it should.
How We Assess It
During an inspection, we look for circular granule loss patterns — distinct from general wear, which is irregular — along with dark bruising or soft spots on the shingle surface. We also check soft metals: vents, flashing, gutters. These dent noticeably and help confirm the hail size and whether it covered the full roof.
What Size Hail Causes a Covered Loss?
Hail under 1 inch typically does not cause functional damage to newer shingles. Hail 1.25 inches and larger is generally where we see impact patterns that meet the threshold for a covered loss on most Ohio policies. The age and condition of the shingles before the storm also factors into what a carrier will pay.
